Artist Statement:
My work is rooted in sustained attention to a small number of places. I return to the same locations over years, sometimes decades, working in front of the subject directly, waiting for similar conditions of light and weather so that each painting builds on a long accumulated knowledge of the place rather than a single encounter with it. The subjects I am drawn to share a particular quality: they sit at a threshold. Rock pools, where stone gives way to water that mirrors the sky. The Sussex chalk coast, where cliffs dissolve into sea-light. Woods, where the weight of trees is both revealed and concealed by falling light. These are places where form is perpetually in negotiation with what surrounds it, and that tension is what I am painting. Rock pools are my main preoccupation at present. I have been working on the Sussex coast for nearly thirty years, and the pools — with their layered light, their shifting reflections, their resistance to easy reading — have become an increasingly absorbing subject. There is always more to understand about the same stretch of rock. I paint in oils, working on site, returning to each painting only when conditions match. Some paintings take a single session; most do not. I was born in 1967 and studied Fine Art at Norwich School of Art 1986 – 1989. I was elected as a member of the New English Art Club in 2021
